Fire Destroys Delta Middle School Building, Arson Investigation Underway

The Delta fire department is investigating a suspicious fire on the campus of Delta Middle School. Firefighters were called to the building on the campus of the middle school at around 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The building currently houses auditorium equipment for the school, mostly chairs, but at one time the building was used as a science lab. The Delta County hazardous materials team was called in as a precaution but firefighters were able to remove any leftover chemicals before the fire got to them. Chief Adam Suppes says the department is treating the fire as a suspicious incident. The cause is still under investigation. There were no reports of injuries and damage was contained to a number of chairs being stored in the building. The loss is estimated at more than $90,000. Classes at the school will be normal Monday.
