Staying fit and healthy is becoming a problem for tens of millions of American children. With more than 15% of all kids overweight, parents are looking for ways to stop this disturbing trend. The Little Gym, a Grand Junction workout center that is designed for kids can help, and give your child the tools necessary to build confidence and maturity.
Little Gyms are franchises that first started 30 years ago and now you can find them across the world. Greg Agnew owns The Little Gym in the Redlands. The classes he and his instructors teach to kids, as young as four months all the way up to 12-year-olds, help develop motor skills in a non–competitive environment. They also focus on fitness that Agnew hopes leads to a lifetime of good health. ”There is plenty of competition out there. Let's give them the same skills in a fun nurturing environment. For those kids who may have a weight issue, we accept them, too, said Agnew.
Parents like The Little Gym philosophy as well. The classes do move quickly, giving the kids an aerobic workout. There are also a variety of gymnastic classes to take and one that teaches the skills of non–contact karate. Jimmy Street, whose son is in the program, says, ”It's good exercise. He loves it. It teaches motor skills and he's learning a lot of balance, patience. He loves it, he gets excited every Thursday when he goes to Little Gym, he thinks it's great.”
The popularity of The Little Gym is spreading across the state of Colorado, and while this is the first one on the Western Slope, you can expect to see more in the future.
