Fruita is the Grand Valley mountain biking city putting the area on the map, but the town of Palisade is hoping to get in on the fun, too. Town officials are planning a mountain bike race for June 11th that could lead to more recognition of what they say are some of the Grand Valley's great trails, but putting the event together has not been an entirely smooth road.
The original route for the race took bikers into the watershed area above town, up the flank of the Grand Mesa, but some landowners on Rapid Creek Road do not want the race crossing their properties. Race planners are now considering an alternate route in the Horse Mountain area, south of town.
The race will have three lengths for different ability levels, from 10 to 28 miles. Organizers say they'll start with a small family–friendly event this year, but hope to develop this into a larger mountain biking festival in years to come.
