An investigation is underway into how an Orchard Mesa field burn escaped control and exploded into a 10 to 15 acre fire that burned a man trying to put the fire out. 27 firefighters from Grand Junction and Orchard Mesa responded to the out of control burn along with ambulances from American Medical Response. Battalion Chief John Williams says it appears a gust of wind caught the fire and blew it into a brush–loaded ditch. In addition to fighting the flames firefighters also had to protect a nearby house that was empty at the time, piles of wood, and old cars and trucks. One man was burned while helping fight the fire and was taken to area hospital. It's not known whether the victim was the landowner or a neighbor.
