The Mesa County District Attorney has a new plan to track sexual offenders in Mesa County. D.A. Pete Hautzinger says his office plans to begin verification checks to make sure registered sex offenders reside at the address they claim to live.
Under Colorado law anyone who commits a sexual offense must register as a sex offender and notify the jurisdiction they live in within five days of relocating. There are 182 registered sex offenders in Mesa County. Within the Grand Junction city limits there are currently 89, and in the Lincoln Park area alone there are 29 sex offenders.
Hautzinger says these types of criminals are commonly repeat offenders.
If you would like to know if there is a sex offender in your neighborhood you can go to the Grand Junction Police Department web site. You can also go down to the police department or sheriffs office and get a list of offenders in your neighborhood.
Hautzinger also says the most important thing a person can do is educate their children about the situation if it occurs in their neighborhood.
