U.S. Congressman John Zalazar, (D) Colorado, says the top of the Roan Plateau should remain off–limits to natural gas drilling and he has suggestions for the Bureau of Land Management.
Salazar asked the agency to analyze and incorporate a community alternative into the plan, as well as provide adequate spacing between gas wells.
Salazar also wants the B.L.M. to study impacts on livestock grazing and water quality. The B.L.M.'S preferred alternative calls for more than 1,500 wells in the area, with 51 above the plateau, but the bureau estimates drilling on top won't happen for at least 16 years.
The public comment period on how the plateau is managed closed Monday.
