Mesa County Commissioners Look At Future Options At Walker Field Airport

Officials from Mesa County and Walker Field Airport in Grand Junction gather to discuss the future of the airport. There are several issues surrounding the airport, infrastructure and roadways throughout the airport are in need of repair. Mesa County commissioners and Walker Field board members are looking for ways to increase revenue, without compromising service or raising fees.

In a general information meeting Thursday the board members briefed thee commissioners on what needs to happen in the next several years. Walker Field is one of the few airports of its size in the country that offers service to more than one major hub.

Currently, the airport sends passengers to Phoenix, Salt Lake City and Denver. While there are no plans to expand commercial service, both sides say there are ways to gather more revenue.

Along with plans to offer more non–commercial flights over the next few years, the airport as well as the City of Grand Junction could increase revenues by providing more retail space by the airport to accommodate general aviators.
