The founder of the Fruita Fat Tire Festival that starts this weeklend is celebrating three anniversaries this year. Grand Valley native Troy Rarick came to back to Fruita from a job in California with a dual vision. He wanted to start a business, and to make the Grand Valley a mecca for mountain biking.
This year the Fruita Fat Tire Festival will celebrate its' 10th anniversary, as will his store Over The Edge Sports, which is housed in a building 100-years-old this year
The first Fat Tire Festival brought 350 riders to hit the trails Rarick and others carved from the terrain around Fruita. The event has now grown to one of international importance, and tries to offer something a little different from other festivals.
The 2005 Fruita Fat Tire Festival kicks off at midnight this Friday night with the first ever 18 Hours of Fruita Endurance Race. Other events are scheduled throughout the first week of May.
