Monday, Mesa County Commissioner's approved two separate liquor licenses for the new Gateway Canyons Resort, but volunteers with the Gateway Unaweep Fire Department voiced their concern about public safety.
They say they're not against granting Gateway Canyons Resort the liquor licenses, but they are concerned about the public's safety on Highway 141.
They are concerned they're not adequately staffed and equipped to respond to alcohol–related emergencies. Gateway Canyons Resort President John Waynes says the concerns are valid, and he hopes the resort and the fire department can work together and come up with a plan.
The commissioners recognized concerns raised Monday, but said the resort did meet the Colorado liquor license guidelines.
Gateway Canyons Resort officials say they hope to be open Memorial Day.
