Expert Speaks About Need For Regional Economies To Adapt To Changing World Marketplace

A nationally–known expert tells Grand Valley business people Tuesday that regional economies must be willing to change in the face of an evolving national job picture.

Washington D.C. think–tank member Rob Atkinson says job outsourcing, and a move away from traditional agriculture and manufacturing, requires a new way of thinking for regional economies.

Atkinson says that doesn't mean moving to a cookie cutter economy or that each area must become another Silicon Valley. Instead, he says cities need to take a close look at their assets and liabilities and decide what opportunities they can capitalize upon, and that applies to the Grand Valley as well.

Atkinson says having jet service from Walker Field Airport would help bring more business to the Grand Valley.

He is Vice President of the non–partisan Progressive Policy Institute.
