State Treasurer Mike Coffman made a stop in Grand Junction Friday in what might be called a farewell tour of the state. Coffman made a surprise announcement Thursday that he is resigning his position as treasurer to go to Iraq as a member of the United States Marines.
Coffman will work with Iraqi leaders in creating a in creating a stable government in the war–torn country. He will be gone about nine months and said he may be losing some of his political clout by leaving.
Coffman was believed to be a front runner in the race for governor next year, but withdrew from consideration in favor of Bob Beauprez, who Coffman says should be a major contender for the Republican Party.
