The City of Grand Junction has released the ten most dangerous intersections list, which caused more than 131 accidents combined last year. The most dangerous intersection in 2004 was at Redlands Parkway and State Highway 340, or Broadway.
A distant second was the intersection of Seventh street and Glenwood avenue, and in third is 28 1/4 Road and Orchard Avenue,
but officials with the public works department say the intersection isn't always what causes an accident. A study shows driver behavior causes 85% of all accidents, while the roadway itself only causes 10% of accidents.
Each year, the city takes the results of the accident report and maps out what intersections have roadway issues that can be fixed. They say some of the problems are easier to spot than others. Hazard elimination grants fund several of the city's current projects, such as the roundabout at 24 ½ and G Road, as well as the new right turn lane going in at 7th Street and Patterson Road.
Currently, the public works department is focusing its efforts on the I–70 business loop. Officials say increased commercial development has led to an increase in traffic problems.
