Police officers from all branches of law enforcement were on the road Friday, as the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics, kicked off in Mesa County. The officers are joined by a number of Special Olympians on the leg eastward on Highways 6 & 50, to the Red Lobster at the Mesa Mall in Grand Junction.
There, a brief ceremony was held honoring some of the olympians and the officers who are running for their benefit. In adition to the run, which winds its' way across the state and eventually to Greeley, many officers are also participating in the Tip–A–Cop fund raiser at Red lobster this weekend.
The Mesa County section of the run covers 66 miles, from the Utah stateline all the way to the Garfield County, where other officers will take the torch.
The Tip-A-Cop event will be this weekend at Red Lobster. Officers say diners should feel free to excede the normal 15% tipping scale so that more money can go to the Special Olympics.
