It's some of the best training they'll ever get, outside of a real mass casualty incident as a two–year multi–agency project is put to the test Saturday in Fruita.
A simulated accident involving two buses and a private vehicle draws at least two dozen state and local agencies from around Mesa County to participate in the mock disaster. The exercise is complicated when a drum containing a hazardous liquid is found on the scene requiring the Grand Junction fire department's hazardous materials squad to respond.
Last month agencies did a tabletop drill to see if the revised emergency plan worked. This on-the-ground test further honed the plan.
