Just days after opening for the season, a highway pass popular with the motoring public has been closed. Independence Pass near Aspen opened earlier this week, but the road has now been closed indefinitely due to a washout from heavy snowmelt.
The road was to open to the motoring public this Memorial Day weekend. The 12,095 foot pass is a popular access point for the high country of the Sawatch Mountain range.
Independence Pass is known as one of the most scenic drives in the United States.
