A Western Slope community college in dire need of a new facility got a generous donation Wednesday that will pay for half of their new facility. Experts say the impact for the Western Slope ecoonomy is huge. EnCana Oil and Gas has donated $3 million dollars to Colorado Mountain College in Rifle
Officials say the impact on the Western Slope is positive because there could be an impending labor shortage in the oil and gas industry because of the possibility of increase oil shale production. Colorado Mountain College has a program that trains its students for the oil and gas industry.
Oil and gas companies can find qualified workers on the Western Slope, as opposed to recruiting them from out of state.
Currently, Colorado Mountain College is operating out of an old elementary school and desperately needs to expand. The generous donation to the college starts the college's capitol campaign fund to build a new campus in Garfield County.
The school estimates the cost of the new building to be around $6 million dollars, meaning this donation already puts them at the halfway mark.
