Rep. Penry Opposes Water Diversion Proposal

State Representative Josh Penry, (R)-Grand Junction, says a plans by a Front Range state senator to jump start a water diversion project is just not in the best interest of people on the Western Slope. Opponents of the Union Park Project say it will divert water from the Gunnison River that than feeds into the Colorado River in Grand Junction.

The project, which has been opposed by Western Slope leaders and Governor Bill Owens, is being looked into again by State Senator Jim Dyer, (R)-Arapahoe. If set into motion, the project would cost $2.5 billion dollars to build a huge dam that would send water to the Front Range.

Penry calls this another Front Range attempt to take Western Slope water in a non–cooperative way.

One Western Slope water expert says the Union Park Project has been tried and failed in the court system for more than 12 years.
