Hundreds of local residents take time to remember that Monday was one of thanks and reflection, as they gather around the Grand Valley for Memorial Day observances. The morning began with a gathering by the Colorado River to remember the millions of marines and sailors who have fought wars around the world, and to recall those who gave their lives in the defense of freedom and continuing peace.

Among the speakers is retired Marine Colonel Roger Hagerty, who says recent Memorial Days have been even more special because of the men and women serving over seas in 2005.

Wednesay, at the Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, hundreds gather for the valley's largest Memorial Day observance. A moment was taken to honor all veterans who came, but a special ceremony is held honoring a group of submariners from aound the state.

The names and numbers of all submarines lost in war since World War II were read to a silent crowd, as the traditional ringing of a bell marked those who were lost at sea, and in accidents aboard submarines.

In addition to these observances, ceremonies were also held in Palisade, and at the Veteran's Cemetery on Orchard Mesa.
