Mesa County School District 51 is rethinking its Drivers Education Program, and trying to determine whether it can financially afford to continue offering it to students. On Tuesday, the board of education will discuss the future of drivers ed offered to high school students.
There's a variety of issues district officials say will influence the board's decision. They include, the ever changing state instructor certification requirements and a deteriorating fleet of cars. Outdated teaching materials, and an increase in teaching options for prospective drivers, are also concerns.
District 51 Spokesperson Jeff Kirtland says the district isn't likely to drop drivers ed classes without enough alternative instructional opportunities to meet the demand. However, some concerned citizens say terminating the program comes at the expense of motorists' safety on area roadways.
