New Mexico J.C. 2005 JUCO Champions!

New Mexico Junior College from Hobbs, New Mexico, won the 2005 Junior College World Series with a 6-3 win over St. Petersburg College from Florida, Saturday afternoon at Suplizio Field in Grand Junction. The Thunderbirds finished the tournament undefeated.

New Mexico scored in the first inning on a Renny Osuna RBI single and never looked back. The T-Birds added another run in the second and broke the game open in the third. Mike Gosse hit a solo home run and Cody Fielding added an inside the park home run, giving New Mexico a 6-0 lead.

St. Petersburg rallied in the eighth inning, finally getting to New Mexico starter Cody Harkcom and cutting the lead to 6-3. But New Mexico brought in reliever Josh Giles who retired the final five batters of the game. Giles struck out the side in the ninth.

It is the first National Championship in New Mexico school history.

Osuna was named the JUCO MVP. New Mexico pitcher Brian Flores, who won both of his starts, was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Pitcher.
