A Western Slope couple is safe following an ordeal that left them stranded in the Bookcliff Mountains near De Beque. Authorities were notified of the missing couple by their daughter who lives in California. She apparently called the Mesa County Sheriff's Office sometime after 10:00 p.m. Saturday when her parents failed to return home from what was supposed to be a day trip. Search and rescue units were dispatched early Sunday morning. According to officials with the sheriff's department a napkin with the word "bookcliffs" and a book with a picture of Mount Garfield and De Beque led rescuer's to the right area. The couple was found about six miles from their vehicle where they had spent the night. The husband and wife were not injured. Three teams set out to find the couple and in addition to using eight all terrain vehicles a plane was also used. The rescue is the fourth in about two weeks for Mesa County's all volunteer search and rescue unit.
