Grand Junction-Blood collection centers around the world take a moment Tuesday to offer thanks to the millions of people who donate blood to save lives. Tuesday was chosen to honor donors because on this day in 1868 Dr. Karl Langsteiner devised the now–well–known "A B O" blood group categories, before that time people given blood often died because of incompatibility.
Since then millions of lives have been saved because of whole blood transfusions, as well as other blood products such as platelets and plasma, but those lives would have been lost had it not been for the millions of people who take time to donate blood, which despite efforts by scientists is still irreplaceable by a synthetic substitute.
As the only blood donor center on the Western Slope, the St. Mary's center sends blood and blood products to hospitals in Delta and as far away as Meeker.
