Police Are Seeing Higher Quality Methamphetamine On Western Slope

Grand Junction-The purity of methamphetamine flowing into the United States is on the rise, and law enforcement agencies on the Western Slope are seeing the same trend locally. Most of the meth confiscated in Mesa County that was manufactured outside this area has had an average purity of 80%, which is a 20% increase in purity over the last few years.

The higher the purity level, the more meth that can be produced from a batch. Once dealers get the wholesale meth, they break it down into a much less pure version, however law enforcement agents have seen meth as broken down as 12%, but as pure as 99%.

The purity of meth is broken down before it becomes available on the street. Average street level methamphetamine averages about 20% purity.

A spokesperson with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office says most of the high–purity meth that comes into our area is manufactured in California and Mexico.
