Corrections Officials Admonished Over Failure To Track Sex Offenders

Denver (AP) State lawmakers are admonishing corrections
officials for failing to classify and track convicted sex
offenders. Prison officials acknowledge they had not been evaluating potential sexual predators in prison before they are released, as a 1999 state law requires.

Department of Corrections Spokeswoman Patti Micciche told lawmakers Wednesday that court officials are supposed to make sure the records of convicted sex offenders are flagged, so it can be determined if offenders should be labeled sexually violent predators as required by federal law.

She says court forms aren't always accurate. State Senator Norma Anderson said corrections officials should not have relied on court officials to do their jobs for them.
