Number Of Students In Mesa County Lunch Program Decreases

The number of children in Mesa County School District 51 receiving free or reduced school lunches will drop slightly for the upcoming school year. Last year, the school district had 41% of its students on the free or reduced lunch program. This year the number is down a negligable amount to 39%.

To qualify for the free or reduced lunch program a family of four must have an annual income below $35,000. Almost 8,000 kids in the district qualify for that program.

School District 51 has seven Title I schools which receive special federal funding based on their percent of students on the free or reduced lunch program. The Colorado state average of children on the program is nearly 32%.

The regular cost for lunch in the district ranges, depending on which grade the child is in, from $1.30 to $2.00. The reduced rate is 40 cents for all students.
