Grand Junction-As the population of the Grand Valley continues to grow, the Mesa County Dispatch Center is seeing an increase in the number of emergency calls. In 2004, more than 400,000 calls were received. Over the past 10 years the center, which handles emergency and non–emergency calls for police, fire and emergency medial services for Mesa County, has seen the number of calls increase by an average of 8–10% each year.
The advent of cell phones has had a significant effect on calls. However, emergency officials say while cell phones have made help more accesible, people still need to be prepared.
Despite the exponential growth in the Grand Valley, officials add the dispatch center will be staffed accordingly, and that residents should be mindful, but never hesitant when dialing 9–1–1.
