Kiowa (AP) Firefighters were working to completely contain an 800 acre wildfire that forced the evacuation of about 50
homes in rural Elbert County. Rocky Mountain Area Coordination Center Spokesman Larry Helmerick says the blaze was 70 percent contained early Wednesday evening, and is expected to be completely contained later in the night.
Helmerick says fire crews got to the blaze quickly and, "did a heck of a job." There's no immediate word on how many residents were evacuated or when they'll be allowed to return home. Helmerick says only two residences remained threatened.
More than 80 firefighters were working the blaze from eleven fire departments in two counties, along with two air tankers, 30 engines and an unknown number of bulldozers and water tenders.
