9-Year-Old Boy Shot To Death In Parachute, Teen Suspect In Custody

Battlement Mesa-A nine–year–old boy was shot and killed by a companion on Battlement Mesa, Wednesday, leaving the small community in disbelief. The incident happened around 2:30 p.m. Police arrived on the scene in a residential neighborhood in Parachute to find a boy shot in the chest.

Police say the victim was shot with a .22 caliber pistol at his friend's house. Police found the victim lying on the front porch when they arrived to the scene. The victim was transported to a hospital in Rifle where he died from his injuries.

According to authorities, three boys, including the victim, were in the home unsupervised when a 14–year–old boy shot the victim. There are six charges against the suspect including manslaughter.

The victim's father did not want to comment, but told 11 News his son was a good boy.

According to officials the case is still under investigation and it's unknown whether the incident was an accident. Officials acknowledge knowing who owns the gun and where it came from, but did not want to divulge the information since the investigation is ongoing.

Officials are not releasing the name of the victim until they have notified the family.

The suspect will also be charged with resisting arrest, felony menacing, and possession of a handgun by a juvenile.
