Denver (AP) Hispanic and Islamic groups are asking Colorado
Congressman Tom Tancredo to resign. About 200 protesters gathered at the state capitol Monday saying the Republican embarrassed Colorado when he recently suggested bombing Islamic holy sites if terrorists launched a nuclear attack on the United States.
Abdur–Rahim Ali, Imam of a muslim shrine in northeast Denver, says Tancredo's statement is unacceptable. Ali asked what would happen if a prominent Muslim made similar comments about Catholic holy places like the Vatican. Hispanic activist Manolo Gonzalez–Estay criticized Tancredo's staunch advocacy of tougher immigration controls.
Tancredo is traveling today and was unavailable for comment, but his spokesman says the four–term congressman has no intention of apologizing or resigning.
