Domestic Violence Cases Rising In Mesa County
One of the most common incidents that the Grand Junction Police Department and Mesa County Sheriff's Office responds to on a daily basis is domestic disputes, and the number of cases is rising. Last year in Mesa County, the sheriffs office responded to 514 domestic dispute calls, while the Grand Junction Police Department responded to 448 domestic dispute incidents.
Nearly 75% of the time the Mesa County Sheriffs made an arrest. According to Sergeant Paul Quimby with the police department, about 75-80% of all domestic disputes involve alcohol and drugs, which can enhance the situation. When responding to a domestic dispute police say their biggest concern are the uknowns.
In Colorado, there is a mandatory arrest law if there's probable cause that someone committed a crime. In most cases domestic dispute calls end in an arrest.
