With the exception of one school renovations within Mesa County School District 51 will not interfere with students returning for classes next month. Chatfield Elementary School is just one of the 14 schools in District 51 receiving some much needed improvements this summer.
New administrative offices and nurse's station, more parking spaces, and a new heating and cooling system, are just some of the projects under construction at the school. Students return to class August 17th and there's been some speculation that some schools won't be ready by that date, but district officials say the big projects will be finished in time, and those that aren't will not interfere with a normal school day.
By the end of June the school district spent more than $6 million dollars of the $109 million dollars allocated through a bond measure approved by voters last November. Roughly $59 million dollars will be spent renovating existing schools within the district.
District 51 Spokesperson Jeff Kirtland says West Middle School is the only facility that will have a delayed opening due to the renovation process. West students will return for classes September 8th.
