Grand Junction Pilot Identified In Fatal Plane Crash

A single-engine plane crashes near Grand Junction's Walker Field Airport Saturday afternoon killing one person. The male pilot who died in the crash has been identified as 58-year-old Richard Kellar of Grand Junction, according to the Mesa County Coronor's Office. At about 12:30 p.m. 911 dispatch received a call from the Walker Field air traffic control tower that a plane taking off had gone down just west of the airport. Emergency crews responded to the scene to find Richard Kellar, the only person on board the plane, did not survive the crash. Mesa County authorities say the cessna became airborne when the engine apparently lost power. The plane came crashing down in a ravine about a mile west of the runway. A private security firm will guard the plane until the National Transportation Safety Board arrives to investigate the crash.
