Explosion Knocks Out Power In Downtown Grand Junction

Faulty equipment in an XCEL Energy substation caused an explosion that rocked part of downtown Grand Junction Wednesday morning and knocked out electricity in parts of the area.

XCEL Energy Spokesperson Wade Haerle said an arrestor on a transformer at the substation failed at 9:40 a.m. that knocked out power in several blocks of the city from Fifth street east to at least 10th street, and from Main Street southward.

City crews responded within minutes to power traffic signals with generators. One resident in the area said the explosion shook the area. Grand Junction firefighters cordoned off the area in case there were additional problems.

Haerle says the cool day helped prevent problem the problem from worsening. XCEL crews were able to route power around the crippled substation. Electricity was restored to the area at 11:04 a.m.
