Although the number of cases reported this year are is down dramatically from a year ago, the Mesa County Health Department is reminding people that we are still in the most active time for mosquitoes that carry the West Nile Virus. The health department has learned that a mosquito pool and a horse have both tested positive for West Nile Virus in Mesa County.
The positive mosquito pool was collected on August third in Grand Junction in an area near Rosevale Road. The horse that tested positive was discovered two days before near Mack. There have only been three human cases of West Nile detected this year in Mesa County.
At this time last year there were 78 human cases.
The health department reminds people to use the regular precautions when outside to protect yourself against West Nile Virus.
