Helena, Mont. (AP) A viral disease that has infected nearly
two dozen horses in montana's yellowstone county is now showing up in cattle. State Veterinarian Tom Linfield says four cows have tested positive for vesicular stomatitis, or V.S. for short.
Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Utah and Wyoming have also
reported confirmed cases of the disease this year. Seventeen sites are now under quarantine to restrict the movement of the animals until three weeks after the blister–like lesions have healed.
Vesicular Stomatitis is rarely fatal, but it is contagious. The
lesions are nearly identical to those caused by foot–and–mouth
disease. The disease causes blisters, in or around the mouth, nostrils, hooves and teats, that swell and burst, exposing raw tissue.
