The Mesa County Judicial Nominating Committee is soliciting applicants to replace retiring District Court Judge Nicholas Massaro. Massaro announced earlier this month he would retire
creating a vacancy on the bench at year's end.
Grand Junction resident Garry Brewer is a member of the commission. He says to be eligible for the position an applicant must be resident and voter in Mesa County and must be admitted to the bar in Colorado. The deadline for applications is September 26th.
Citizens may also suggest a candidate by submitting a letter to the commission. The six member nominating committee is composed of three lawyers and three citizens who will cut to four the number of names that will be submitted to the Governor, who will select the new judge. Brewer says he expects a large number of applicants.
The initial term of a district judge is two years. After that time the judge can be elected to the bench by voters for a term of six years. The annual salary for a district judge is $110,255.
