Smith Says Penry's State Senate Run Will Divide Republican Party

Former State Representative Matt Smith calls State Representative Josh Penry's announcement he is running for State Senator Ron Teck's seat unfortunate. Smith says it could divde the Republican Party in Mesa County. Smith announced he would run for Senator Teck's seat last month.

Smith says eight years experience in the statehouse makes him a better choice to represent the Western Slope as senator compared to penry, who Smith says has served only 120 days as an elected representative. Smith says he has a proven record as someone who can get things done.

Smith left the house due to term limits. Since then he has continued to work on water and energy issues as well as helping on his family's ranch in Meeker. Smith says he announced early, not to keep others from running, but because so many people had urged him to run for Teck's seat.

Teck cannot run for that seat again due to term limits.
