The positive impacts of the energy boom in Western Colorado is most noticeable by the severance tax payment recently issued to Mesa County. Severance tax is the money energy companies pay to the state for extracting minerals from the ground. That money is then distributed to counties, cities, and towns based on the number of people living in those areas who are employed by the energy companies.
The amount issued to Mesa County this year totals more than $1.1 million dollars, substantially more than last year's nearly $273,000 allocation, but when compared with the overall increase across the state, it's possible Mesa County should have received more money.
There's nothing Mesa County can do to try and recover any of this year's payment, however, Mesa County Commissioners are planning to take up the issue of how severance tax funds are distributed in the future with the Departments of Revenue and Local Affairs, as well as state legislators.
