B.L.M. Crew Battles Wildfire On The Colorado National Monument

Quick response by a Bureau of Land Management crew keeps a blaze near the Colorado National Monument from exploding into a major wildfire Wednesday afternoon. Just after 2:00 p.m. a fire was reported just west of Upper No Thoroughfare Canyon near the southern border of the monument.

The fire was burning in sage brush and grasses when crews arrived, but strong winds from a nearby thunderstorm threatened to push the fire into dense stands of pinyon and juniper west over Glade Park Road.

One single–engine air tanker was called to make two retardant drops on the fire as the ground crew continued to work. Crews were still on the scene late Wednesday to ensure the fire does not escape containment lines.

The cause of the fire had not been released.
