Mayor Seeks To End Contention Over Denver Columbus Day Parade

Denver (AP) Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper says he's had enough. He has sent a letter to Italian–Americans and American Indians telling them to stop putting the city in the middle of their fight. Hickenlooper didn't take sides in a two–page letter to leaders of both communities Wednesday.

He said trying to bring the two sides together is like beating your head against a wall. American Indians say Columbus was guilty of genocide. Italian–Americans say he should be honored for his discovery of the new world.

Each year American Indians protest a parade in his honor,
usually resulting in the brief arrest of some of them.
