For the first time all season, Grand Junction trailed at halftime Saturday, behind 10-7 against Ralston Valley.
No matter. The Tigers exploded in the second half, scoring 29 points and picked up a 36-16 win to advance to the Class 4A State Championship game at Invesco Field.
Quarterback Isaiah Quigley started the scoring in the third quarter, running it in from 16 yards to give Junction its first lead 14-10. On the Tigers next possession, Quigley fired 28 yards to Justin Murray for a score, making it 21-10 Tigers.
Ralston Valley got a score to trim the lead to 21-16, but then the Tigers defense recovered a fumble in the endzone, pushing the lead to 29-16. Kris Means capped the scoring with an 11 yard touchdown run.
The Mustangs drove the length of the field on their opening drive, eventually scoring on a fourth down and goal from the three, to Grand Junction behind 7-0. Ralston would later add a field goal.
Grand Junction plays Thunderridge at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the championship. Its the first title game to be played at Invesco Field at Mile High.
