One of Mesa County's most wanted criminals was behind bars Thursday night after a car chase on Interstate 70 that topped speeds of more 100 miles-per-hour. It began just after 10:00 a.m. when a Utah State Patrol officer notified the Colorado State Patrol he was engaged in a high–speed pursuit.
The black Acura was reported stolen from Dalton's Auto in Grand Junction Wednesday morning. The car was headed eastbound into Mesa County from Utah when troopers from the Colorado State Patrol and Mesa County Sheriff's deputies joined the chase.
Troopers placed stop strips at the Mack exit.
Despite a blown out front tire the driver continued eastward to the Loma exit. The car slid to a stop just off the edge of Highway 139 about 100 yards north of the interstate.
Troopers arrested 21–year–old Wayne Kelley of Grand Junction who is wanted in Mesa County for a number of outstanding warrants. Passenger Tasha Chapin was also taken into custody.
Troopers found a handgun when they searched the interior of the car. Kelly will face charges of auto theft, vehicular eluding, theft by receiving and reckless driving.
