The Western Colorado Congress convenes for its 25th annual meeting in Grand Junction Saturday. The advocacy group encourages community action to protect and enhance the quality of life in Western Colorado. Environmentalist Lois Gibbs who has focused on environmental issues since 1978 when she found out her son's school in upstate New York was built on a toxic waste dump highlighted the session. With energy companies once again pushing for a Western Colorado energy boom, Gibbs says those who are concerned with the possible environmental problems with drilling need to take action. In the past 25 years, the Western Colorado Congress has spearheaded a number of note–worthy environmental and consumer protection acts including blocking the creation of a radioactive waste dump and preventing excessive utility–rate hikes.
