Search Is On For Mountain Bikers Stranded In The Desert

With the weather conditions worsening, time is of the essence for Mesa County Search and Rescue crews trying to locate three mountain bikers lost in the desert north of Fruita. Mesa County dispatch received a call from a 9–1–1 only cell phone around five P.M. Saturday. A person on the line was requesting help. Dispatchers tell 11 News the three bikers, two men and one woman, all adults, got stranded while riding the "edge trail" in the BLM recreation area off 18 Road near the Bookcliffs. Authorities found a blue Chrysler van at the trailhead registered to a rental company in Denver. The caller said the bikers were not equipped with winter gear and had only a little bit of water. The cell phone battery was low. Search and rescue officials say they're expanding their search east to 21 Road.
