One runway at Grand Junction's Walker Field Airport is closed for three hours Thursday morning after a Federal Express airplane blows a tire upon landing. The Boeing 727 was inbound from San Francisco when the outer wheel on the left wing caught fire and exploded.
Firefighters at the airport were able to extinguish the flames quickly. One runway was closed for several hours so the plane could be moved and workers could sweep the area for debris.
Planes often make emergency landings at the airport and most of the time the landing is precautionary.
Walker Field Spokesperson Charles Novenskie describes this incident as routine and says this problem provided a good opportunity for emergency personnel to get some experience in an actual incident.
