Denver (AP) Secretary of State Gigi Dennis isn't getting
involved in the tiff between Republican gubernatorial candidates Marc Holtzman and Bob Beauprez. At issue was Holtzman's appearance on television ads opposing a proposed budget fix on the November ballot, something that has become a key theme in his run for Governor.
Beauprez's campaign had complained that Holtzman was trying to sidestep campaign finance laws because his father donated
$100,000 to a committee formed to defeat the ballot measures. That campaign paid for the ads.
His father would only be able to give $1,000 to Holtzman's campaign under the campaign finance law, but donations to issues committees are not limited.
Dennis, also a Republican, dismissed Beauprez's complaint,
saying a ruling against the commercials might violate Holtzman's free speech rights.
