Empire, Colo. (AP)- a 32–year–old man was killed in an
avalanche this morning on Berthoud Pass. Grand County Sheriff Rod Johnson says the skier was buried for about two hours in the backcountry. Johnson said the man and two other skiers triggered the slide around 10:30 this morning in the Mines Peak area, an area prone to avalanches. A second slide was triggered when rescuers approached, but no one was caught in it. No names were released. Spencer Logan of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center says both avalanches were at least 300 feet wide, 2 to 4 feet deep and 15–hundred vertical feet long.
