Moab Man Dies In Oil Rig Accident In Garfield County

A Moab man was killed Monday when he fell 80 feet off a derrick near Battlement Mesa. Larry D. Hill was fixing something on the rig tower when he fell an estimated 75 to 80 feet. The accident happened at 5:30 a.m. on Union Drilling Rig 32.

It isn't known whether Hill was wearing a harness at the time he fell or a malfunction occurred, but federal guidelines require workers to wear a safety harness when working at heights. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident and will issue a report in a few months.

An autopsy is being performed by Garfield County Coroner Trey Holt, but complete results are not expected for a week to ten days.

This is the first drill rig fatality reported in Colorado this year.
