Diabetes is a growing epidemic nationwide and impacts close to 2,000 people here in Mesa County, but if the number of diabetes patients continues to increase then medical insurance providers may have a greater problem.
According to David Herr, Associate Medical Director at Rocky Mountain Health Plans, the average cost to treat a diabetic patient is three times the amount it takes to treat a non–diabetic patient.
That costs insurance companies anywhere from $600-700 a month per patient. Multiply that by the 1900 diabetics in Mesa County and that cost reaches more than $1 million a month, thereby making it a huge challenge for this countries' entire health system.
Rocky Mountain Health Plans has a program called Rocky Mountain for your Health which gives diabetics the tools they need to help control their disease.
