Grand Junction City Councilmembers say there is a misunderstanding about funding decisions made during a work session Monday night. Councilmember Greg Palmer says he and other members have been flooded with calls protesting a decision to withhold $472,000 in money remaining from oil and gas severance funds.
A number of non–profit groups, including the Western Colorado Botanical Gardens and the Grand Junction Housing Authority requested part of those remaining funds. Council members decided to use the remaining money for projects around the city, including remodeling part of 7th Street and purchasing the Jarvis Property near downtown Grand Junction.
Palmer says there is a misconception that those non–profits would be without operating funds. Her says the Western Colorado Botanical Gardens requested money to hire an executive director, which falls outside the normal funding duties of the city council.
The Marillac Clinic and the Treehouse are among other non–profits whose additional funding requests were denied.
